Here and There with "Hear and There"
By: Maureen A. Duffy, M.S., CVRT, Editorial Director of AWARE.

Every once in a while, I receive an email from a reader, telling me about an organization or service I've never heard about before (much to my chagrin).
Thus it was with
Hear and There Audio Magazine, a radio program and podcast that is hosted and produced by Dave Uhlman, a visually impaired accessibility consultant. Dave describes
Hear and There as an adventure program that provides detailed audio descriptions of museums, nature walks, art shows, news events, and all manner of life–involving and –enhancing events.
Dave "puts words to the visual" that enable his listeners (blind, sighted, and visually impaired) to "see," savor, and enjoy whatever new adventure Dave has captured via podcast.
Hear and There visits venues with accessible features, provides detailed audio descriptions, and encourages listeners to attend and participate in the events he reports and describes.
So where do I begin? How about by meeting Dave? Here he is, in his own words:
"I started recording Hear and There (H&T) about five years ago on WRRS Radio Reading Service in Cincinnati, Ohio. I recently took the program on the Internet with my web site, podcasts, and broadcasting on web radio stations.
H&T is currently heard over 70 times a month on various sources and is also heard on several Radio Reading Service stations around the United States.
I make each program about a real-life experience. I like to find the beauty in the world and describe it. People with disabilities are an important ingredient in the program, but the show is not about disability; instead, it's about the experience of the person, their perceptions and observations, their unique way of seeing the world, and the actions they take to enjoy it.
The H&T descriptions show details the casual observer would miss. We talk about the experiences everyone can have, and add details to fill in the picture."
And what experiences they are! At the
Hear and There downloads page, I listened to correspondent (and blind teacher) Kitty Hevener describe her experience swimming with Capricorn the dolphin at Discovery Cove, Florida. In the photo below, Kitty is holding the dolphin's top dorsal fin as she is pulled through the water:

And, um, I was ...
transfixed as I listened to correspondent Margie Stocker and Dave's visit to the Cincinnati Zoo to pet cheetah cubs. In the photo below, Margie is petting a cheetah cub, while another cub reclines in the foreground, watching the camera:

And on the
Hear and There press releases page, I listened to an
excellent podcast of the 2010 BP Gulf oil spill, including audio descriptions of satellite photos of the spill:

But enough from me. I urge you to visit the
Hear and There Audio Magazine web site and see/hear for yourself. The world is truly an amazing place, isn't it? Thank you, Dave!

Interview with Dave Uhlman
We are very lucky to have in our midst an extremely talented and friendly member called Dave Uhlman. I am sure that some of you must have already heard his show “Hear and there” and interacted with him on Inclusive Planet.
Hear and There Audio Magizine is an adventure program that is centered on detailed descriptions. Dave gives his unique perspective on museums, nature walks, art shows or just about anyplace he can visit. Dave can put words to the visual so the listener can see and enjoy the experience. Many of the places they go are accessible for people with disabilities.
Personally, I love the show! I was also lucky enough to spend some time speaking with him about how he started doing the show, and what he loves most about doing it.
I’m also really glad that The Dolphin show has been very popular with the members on Inclusive Planet!
